National Cancer Survivors Day Celebration - 6/9/2009 -

Local events at CyberKnife Center include free PSA screening, speakers
Lafayette, LA—CyberKnife Center-Louisiana and Lafayette General are participating in National Cancer Survivors Day®, a part of the world’s largest cancer survivor event (officially Sunday, June 7, 2009). The local event, emceed by KSMB radio personality and survivor Ali Roberts, will kick off with a city/parish proclamation from councilman Don Bertrand, followed by a motivational guest speaker and prostate cancer survivor, PSA screenings, and garden therapy presentation by master gardener Theresa Guidry. The public is invited to attend this free event on June 9 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, at Lafayette General’s Radiation Oncology Center and CyberKnife Center, 155 Hospital Drive, Suite 100. Registration for screenings will begin at 5 pm.
“Come learn how surviving cancer is an attitude about life and living each day to the fullest,” says Jason Abshire, RN, Nurse Manager of CyberKnife Center and NCSD coordinator for Lafayette General Medical Center. “You will find our event, called ‘Living in Full Bloom’ filled with joy, camaraderie, hope, compassion, faith and love as we honor all cancer survivors for their strength and courage. We will have two great speaker presentations, in addition to a blessing of survivors, dedication of a survivor green space with flowers and bench, and tours of the CyberKnife Center.”
Dr. Scott Silver, a retired orthopedic surgeon from Naples, Florida, will share his journey from diagnosis to CyberKnife treatment and beyond with other survivors. Theresa Guidry’s demonstration on container gardening for therapy will show attendees how to create a ‘Garden of Hope’ green space in any location. To emphasize the importance of preventative screenings, men 45+ will be able to get a free blood PSA screen following Dr. Silver’s presentation. This local event is part of a worldwide celebration coordinated by the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation and sponsored nationally by Coping® magazine and Lilly Oncology.
“As an active person, I had my share of injuries, but I wasn’t really prepared for the diagnosis of cancer when it was given to me,” says Dr. Silver. “I was devastated. Fortunately, the support I had from my family, friends and doctors helped me get through this difficult period to the point where I am now—well on my way to a complete cure with no complications or side effects from the treatment I chose. I go around the country telling my story hoping to help just one other person see that he or she is not alone. I also want people to know that there are new treatment options available.”
Anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life, is a cancer survivor, according
to the NCSD Foundation. This year marks the 22nd annual, worldwide celebration of life to be held in hundreds of communities throughout the United States, Canada, and other participating countries. Cancer survivors, caregivers, family members, friends and healthcare professionals will unite to show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive.
“Despite the adversities, cancer survivors face each day with courage and dignity and serve as an inspiration to all of us,” says Abshire.
